A Pinellas County sheriff's marine unit found an empty fishing boat off Mullet Key this morning, and authorities are searching for a possible missing boater.

While on patrol at about 10 a.m. The deputy on patrol spotted a small boat with a 25 horsepower engine stranded on a beach on Shell Key, which is just north of Fort DeSoto State Park.

Along with the deputies, a Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter and boat began searching for a possible missing boater. A boat fom Eckerd College's search and rescue team is also out looking for possible victim.

Because the boat is very small, authorities believe only one person was on it.

It would be the second time this week that a boat was stranded in the area, which is under a small boat advisory from the National Weather Service. On Wednesday, a trio of fishermen were stranded in shark-infested waters off Fort DeSoto. No one was hurt.
